Assisted Passage - A Struggle for Acceptance
Although there is evidence of Greeks settling in Australia from the early 1800's, it was the 1952 agreement between the Australian and Greek Governments on Assisted Passage for Greek migrants that gave impetus to significant migration from Greece in the 1950s and 1960s. The exhibition examines the controversial events that led to the wave of Greek assisted migration post 1952. As well as a short documentary , the exhibition includes documents from the National Archives, exhibited for the first time, which lay bare the controversial political negotiations between Greece and Australia which in turn led to the establishment of an assisted passage agreement.
