GREEK SETTLEMENT IN AUSTRALIA

Although there is evidence of Greeks settling in Australia from the early 1800's, it was the 1952 agreement between the Australian and Greek Governments on Assisted Passage for Greek migrants that gave impetus to significant migration from Greece in the 1950s and 1960s. The Hellenic Museum has developed three exhibitions examining the various periods of Greek settlement in Australia. 

1. "Through a Child's Eyes", an audio visual exhibition examining the lives of those who came to Australia as children during the period of mass assisted migration post 1952.

2. "Assisted Passage - A Struggle for Acceptance", an exhibition examining the controversial events that led to the wave of Greek assisted migration post 1952.

2. "Antipodean Odyssey", an audio visual exhibition outlining a timeline of Greek settlement in Australia from the early 1800's till now.

PERMANENT COLLECTIONS

1. Trendall Collection: A.D. (Dale) Trendall was a legendary figure and one of the foremost historians of Greek art of the 20th century. He was the principal authority on the red-figure vases produced in the Greek colonies and native areas of South Italy and Sicily during the 5th and 4th centuries BCE.

2. The Mary and Peter Mitrakas Collection of Cypriot Antiquities: The current vases in the collection form part of one of the largest private collections of Cypriot antiquities in the world. They were once in the collection of the renown classical scholar Leto Severis of Nicosia and span a period of 1200 years, between 1800 - 600 B.C.

3. Hellenic Statues: Ten cast statues selected and curated by archaeological museum services in Greece.
