Ancient Etymology: how Greek is your English?

Many of the terms used in the study of the English language — including but not limited to morphology and metaphor, irony and idiom, hyponymy and hyperbole — are borrowed from the ancient Greek grammarians. In this workshop, students will identify and reflect on the influence of ancient Greece on the English language and its analysis. They will evaluate Hellenic Museum exhibits for linguistic connections, handle replica and authentic objects, and analyse a selection of primary, secondary and multimodal texts. Students will leave the museum with a deeper knowledge and appreciation of ancient Greek influences on the English lexicon.
