Oedipus the King

Students interact with ancient Greek artefacts and exhibitions to enhance their understanding of the historical, social and cultural context of Sophocles’ 5th century tragedy Oedipus the King. They will handle both real and replica objects to build historical understanding, interrogate views and values of the past, and evaluate the text from the perspective of both an ancient audience and a contemporary reader. Students will act out extracts from the play to expand their understanding of early theatrical conventions and learn about the social and religious significance of theatre in the ancient Greek world.
