Event Details

Get a taste of what to expect at the Hellenic Museum Summer School 2026, in this free talk presented by Summer School lecturer Dr Christopher Gribbin.

Discover the magic of ancient Cyprus, an island with a unique and complex history. Located in the eastern Mediterranean, it straddled both the Greek and Near Eastern worlds in antiquity. This is revealed most vividly in its religious sites, where Greek and Phoenician elements sat side by side for centuries. The jewel in the crown was the sanctuary of Aphrodite, who was supposedly born on Cyprus. Her sanctuary flourished for 1500 years and became one of the most important religious sites in the Graeco-Roman world. This talk will explore this and other religious sites of ancient Cyprus, showcasing their variety and the fascinating myths that went along with them. Delivered in person at the Hellenic Museum, or online via Zoom.

Online attendees will receive the Zoom link by email in the week leading up to the event.
