Event Details
In ancient Greek mythology, human life was imagined as a single thread, and the keepers of this thread and weavers of our destinies were personified as three sisters called The Fates. These school holidays, young historians can discover this fascinating myth and learn the ancient art of weaving at Threads of Life, a hands-on workshop where craft and mythology collide.
Before settling into the workshop space, the session will start with an introduction to The Fates' fascinating myth, and a chance to see them in the Hellenic Museum collections. We'll also learn about spinning and weaving, and how these ancient crafts became symbols of destiny and mortality.
Then, it's time to get creative! Guided by museum staff, budding artisans will learn how to weave their own tapestry on a miniature loom. Follow a simple pattern or design one of your own, and come away with a finished weaving that can be hung on the wall, used as a coaster or bookmark, or even sewn into a bracelet. Its fate is yours to choose!
This workshop is presented by the Hellenic Museum Argonauts Club, and is ideal for young explorers, artists and mythology enthusiasts aged 6–13. Tickets include all materials, and Museum general admission after the workshop.
