Gods, Myths & Mortals postcard

Gods, Myths & Mortals postcard

A 15cm by 21cm postcard from the Gods, Myths & Mortals exhibition. This postcard depicts the Beheading of John the Baptist, from an Ionian workshop dating to the second half of the 18th century.

Gods, Myths & Mortals brought 8,000 years of Greek civilisation to Melbourne – with each time period celebrating the continuity and transformation which have shaped the Greek world. Carefully curated objects traced the development of tools and technologies to the expansion of trade; the role of myth as a means to understand the known world, to the shift toward monotheism; and the maintenance of identity during foreign rule and the emergence of the Greek state.

This exhibition was on loan to the Hellenic Museum from the collection of the Benaki Museum, Athens from 2014 until 2024.
