The Hellenic Museum and THEMATIKOS present Seasonal Scents: A Candle Making Workshop.
Join us for an afternoon of history and craft at the Hellenic Museum, as we explore the history of candles and candle-making before pouring your very own take-home soy candle.
Assistant Curator Sara Prica will take you through the fascinating history of scent and light in Byzantine Orthodox tradition. Candles have been used as a source of light and to illuminate celebrations for more than 5,000 years, and together you’ll explore its deep roots in antiquity and in customs today.
THEMATIKOS will then teach you how to make a soy candle from scratch! Together, you’ll formulate a signature scent from a range of fragrances which will form the basis of your very own hand-poured candle. You’ll have the chance to name your creation, which will be yours to take home at the end of the workshop!
The THEMATIKOS brand was started by a mother and son in Melbourne. Inspired by the power scent has to trigger nostalgia, they develop blends that draw upon their Greek heritage and life in Melbourne while also blurring the lines between classical antiquity and contemporary minimalism.
